Grace Moseley - Ceramic Artist
Grace Moseley, the maker behind Blackwood Ceramics, is a ceramic artist based in the Huon Valley, Tasmania. She works from her hilltop studio, overlooking Kunanyi and the Sleeping Beauty mountain range, where the surrounding landscape deeply informs her practice. Her work reflects the beauty and wildness of this environment, balancing functionality with expressive artistry.
Grace creates a range of pieces including mugs, cups, and platters, though her current focus is on vases. These works are brought to life through the sgraffito technique, where carved surfaces reveal layered colour and intricate detail. Inspired by the Huon Valley and her vibrant garden, her pieces often feature botanical forms and organic textures.
She is particularly interested in how her surrounding environment intuitively shapes her work—how shifts in season, light, and atmosphere are reflected in form, colour, and mark-making. With a love of colour, texture, and the natural world, Grace’s decorated vessels capture the energy of place, each piece thoughtfully carved and richly illustrated.
“Making ceramics brings me joy and sparks my creativity. It's a flow state that keeps me connected to my surroundings. The journey from imagining a piece and bringing it to life is deeply satisfying. The process of handcrafting each ceramic piece allows me to be fully present and immersed in this environment.”
Blackwood Ceramics
My studio is nestled beneath a towering Blackwood tree (Acacia melanoxylon) that stands sentinel over my work. Blackwood Ceramics embodies the strength and natural beauty of its namesake.
